Coreen leaves it late to make her mark

CAMBRIDGE'S women won their third Varsity match in a row thanks to Coreen Grant's fine 77thminute solo try.

The centre, who represents at club level, sliced through the Oxford midfield from a scrum before stepping off her right foot to beat two more scrambling defenders and score from 45 metres.

It saw the Light Blues repeat their 8-5 victory from last year, though it had looked unlikely as they trailed for much of the game to a close-range try from Jessica Abele – who last year was a replacement for Cambridge.

“We'd been behind the whole game but knew we had more to give,” said Grant, a former U20 international.

“They'd been really good at keeping us on the back foot.

“I'd quite like to watch the try back– it'll stand out for a long time as a special memory.” Oxford still lead the alltime standings, winning 19 women's Varsity matches to Cambridge's 14.
