Hayes makes name for himself at Caldy

Caldy…37

Fylde …19

CALDY announced themselves onto the National One scene with a stunning victory over north-west rivals Fylde.

The crowd were as radiant as the weather as they watched their team frustrate Fylde into submission in what was a fiery and physical opening home fixture of the season.

Fylde were left sleeping as Rhys Hayes broke through the defence to score the first try of the game within a minute of the whistle.

After ten minutes of Caldy onslaught, Fylde eventually found their feet and the pacey Tom Carleton went over in the corner.

The rest of the half was Caldy’s with tries from Gavin Roberts and JJ Dickinson putting the home side into a commanding 25- 12 lead going into half-time.

The second half ‘s physicality had supporters on the edge as Fylde ramped up the pressure with a second from Carleton making it 25-19.

However it was Caldy’s outstanding professionalism which saw them run away with the game in the final 15 minutes.

Roberts went under for his second shortly before a superlative cross-field kick from Hayes put Ben Jones in for Caldy’s fifth of the day.

Head Coach Simon Verbickas will look to build on what was a true team performance at the fortress of Paton Field as they go on to face Loughborough next.
