BARNES deservedly won a scrappy opening encounter, their forwards having the upper hand in both tight and loose and Daniel Robertshaw crossing for four tries.
With the early encounters cagey, it was Canterbury who settled first, pressurising the Barnes defence, which held firm against an early onslaught.
The first quarter was played largely between the 22s, scrappy fare with a smattering of errors from both teams.
