Northampton Saints returned to the top of the Prem table with a hard-fought one-point win over Newcastle Red Bulls.

Bath had climbed above Phil Dowson’s Saints with victory over Saracens on Friday, but Northampton dug in for a gritty 28-27 win against the basement side at Franklin’s Gardens.
