DIVISION One newcomers Hampshire pushed last season’s runners up, Hertfordshire, all the way.
Tries from Wayne Dugan, Curtis Barnes and Charlie Stonehill kept the hosts in the contest but Hertfordshire’s forward power ensured they opened their campaign with a win.
Dugan’s smart finish, latching on to Robbie Searle’s delicate kick, settled Hampshire after they had soaked up plenty from the visiting forwards.
