It takes a certain level of chutzpah to turn down the chance of joining Saracens but former Yorkshire Carnegie academy product Joe Carpenter says he knew exactly what he was doing when he opted to cross the Pennines and join Sale Sharks instead.
Born in Leeds, Carpenter, 18, had hoped for a Premiership future with his home town club. However, a summer of strife at Carnegie meant looking for pastures new and he believed a move to Sale offered him the best chance of a topflight breakthrough.
