Pontypridd made to battle but remain in the title hunt

PONTYPRIDD kept their slim title hopes alive as they claimed a hardfought victory over RGC1404 in Colwyn Bay.

In a game played in awful conditions, it was the North Walians who opened the scoring. Scrum-half Nick Butterworth dummied at the base of the ruck before running in for a try, which Billy McBryde converted.

But the damp weather conditions suited the visitors, with Pontypridd's pack beginning to gain the upper hand.

And they levelled the scores when Rob Jones touched down after a powerful driving line-out, with Ceri Sweeney converting.

Pontypridd scored their second try soon after when Alex Webber went over at the far right-hand corner after some slick handling from his inside backs.

But RGC dragged themselves back into the game with former Under 20s full-back Afon Bagshaw crossed on the stroke of half-time to give the Gogs a 14-12 lead.

Pontypridd were on top in the early stages of the second half and began to build pressure in the RGC 22, forcing openside flanker Will Bryan to the sin-bin for cynically killing the ball at the breakdown.

Pontypridd lay siege to the RGC line and, despite not immediately breaching it, they re-took the lead with a Sweeney penalty. The former Wales outside-half landed another penalty soon after to extend Pontypridd's lead to four points and that was enough.
