Tough for Guernsey but they steal a win

GUERNSEYmaintain their lead after a highly competitive 21-22 win over Shelford at The Davey Field.

Shelford led 7-5 at the interval, with a try just before the whistle by Josh Simmons, who also added the conversion, to counter an early try from Guernsey by Anthony Armstrong The Channel Islanders had the better of the early second-half exchanges with three further tries taking advantage of Shelford’s Grant Anderson in the sin bin.

Back to full strength, Shelford came back with tries from Atelea Moa and Anzelo Tuitavuki, both converted by Simmons to make it a one-point game.

However, despite further efforts from the home side, the Guernsey defence held out for the win.

Second-placed Barnes still lead the chasing group. They were 33-19 winners at home to Westcombe Park. Robbie Marty led the charge with a hat-trick, with Matt Murray and Matthew Cornish over for one each, Charlie Wicks was on target with four conversions.

The visitors managed three tries and two conversions.

Tring, just one point adrift, hammered Guildford 5-73. Tommy Heaton claimed a hat-trick, Noah Jarvis, Elliot Byfield and George Hayes two each and Jonny Morgan and Oscar Potter-Nicholson in for one each. Heaton slotted nine conversions.

Hertford edged a 17-19 win over Dorking but were unable to take the bonus point and slip back a touch.

Rory Mitchell went over for the home side. There was also a penalty try, while Matt Noble kicked a conversion and a penalty.

Southend Saxonswent down 8-45 at home to Tunbridge Wellswho crossed for seven tries, adding five conversions. In a high scoring game at Crescent Farm, Sutton and Epsom took the honours 25-32 over Sidcup. Sam Eydeman, Sam Evans and Mike Harrison were the home try scorers.

Seb Bonizzi Adam Ciccarelli, Matt Harwood and Matt Whittackerwere the try scorers for Sutts.

In the final game of the round, Westcliff beat Towcestrians 68-10. Jake Spivey dashed in for three to finish as the home side’s lead try scorer.
