Ebbw Vale …16 RGC 1404 …14

A LAST-GASP penalty from Dorian Jones saw progress to the second round of the WRU National Cup at the expense of RGC in a thrilling encounter at Eugene Cross Park. Jones' late kick saw the Steelmen turn the tie around in the dying moments, earning a narrow victory despite having trailed for the entire second period and looking like they were heading for defeat.

Ebbw Vale had opened the scoring in the first half thanks to a well-taken try from Toby Fricker, who held off two challenges to cross after being put through by Dai Jones' delightful chipped kick. Jones converted to give the hosts an early 7-0 lead.

And while they retained their advantage for much of a quiet first period, RGC eventually struck back through tries from Evan Yardley and then Jordan Scott, both able to power over at the back of the pack late in the first half. Jacob Bottica was able to add the extras to both to leave the half-time score at 14-7 to the visitors.

Ebbw Vale had the better of the second half, but were only able to add six points from the boot of Jones as RGC largely held firm going into the dying minutes.

But a late penalty award from referee Ian Davies gifted the home side the opportunity they needed, and Jones again held his nerve and made no mistake in sealing the tie for his side.
