Sale Sharks expected to be jostling for a place in the Premiership final but found themselves scrambling to get into the Champions Cup after their most difficult season this decade.

They were more porpoises than sharks, winning just five matches and doubled by all the top five clubs.
The only team they did not lose to was Harlequins and they even blew a 25-point half-time lead against the bottom club Newcastle Red Bulls in the penultimate match of the season.
