Despite his innate professionalism – he calmed the nerves of an audience spooked by the sight of blood by reminding them that during an episode of the children’s programme Blue Peter, an elephant had left a dark mark of its own on the same studio floor – the incident cost him his job.
“Typical BBC – always getting it wrong,” screamed the right-wing press. “Scrap the licence fee.”
