‘Shunto’ spent his career on the bench

THE village of Penclawwd, renowned for its cockles and for sending a pair of schoolboy half backs to run rings round the All Blacks, bids farewell at Llanelli Crematorium on Tuesday (12pm) to another of its renowned rugby sons.
Roy ‘Shunto’ Thomas was famous, maybe not as famous as Willie Davies and Haydn Tanner, the teenaged duo at the heart of Swansea’s 1935 win over New Zealand, but famous none the less. ‘Shunto’ had long been a folk hero to thousands beyond his native shore and not just because he helped Llanelli beat the All Blacks in 1972.
