Gloucester just missed out on the play-offs last season after honing an attacking game that took them up the table but they overhauled their squad and changed captains.

Lewis Ludlow had led the side for five years, a figure of defiance during the lean times, but he has been replaced as captain by the Wales scrum-half Tomos Williams, the Premiership’s player of the year last season, his first in the tournament.
