It’s no longer a fair contest in scrum

I LOVE the game of rugby but don’t pretend to understand all the laws of the game, particularly the demise of the scrum.
I’m old enough to remember when the scrum-half would place the ball into the middle of the front rows, and the opposing hookers would attempt to strike the ball in order to try and gain possession for their team.
The scrum today is no longer a fair contest to try and win possession, the team that places the ball into the scrum, regains control.
