So England started with an 11 try romp, a World Cup record attendance of 42,723 and a performance to send a shiver down the spine of prospective opponents.
As opening nights go, it could hardly have been better.
There was a fair old splattering, already, of cowboy hats in the Stadium of Light crowd which is a trend set to grow as England advance through the tournament while, on the pitch, there were also a variety of lasso type celebrations from those scoring.
