The selection call by Steve Borthwick to pick two veteran scrumhalves, Ben Youngs and Danny Care, in his 41-man World Cup training squad is surprising in a position that leans towards young legs and lungs because it has become so aerobically demanding.
What makes it even more of a head-scratcher is that neither Care, 36, nor Youngs, who will be 34 when the tournament starts, have had their best seasons. Care was not part of England’s plans under Borthwick in the Six Nations, while the now discarded Alex Mitchell was selected on the bench ahead of Youngs from the middle of the tour...
