Loughborough took the honours in a pulsating game that swung one way and another in a nine-try contest.
From the start down the slope, the Students pressed, but were held and Reds attacked with a superb move resulting in Ashley Groves kicking a penalty. But the visitors hit back with a try by Patten converted by Wainwright.
More threatening drives resulted in the ball held up over the line, but another move enabled lock Chris Pursall to barrel over. Groves and Wainwright kicked penalties to go in at half-time 11-10.
