The enforced four-week lay-off, due to frost and festivities seemed to release pent-up energies in the home as they produced an opening half hour of peerless back play.
Ionians ran amok, with some superb handling and interplay leading to tries for Townend, Minikin, Pocklington and backrower Sanderson.
But Wharfedale were not going to roll over, and they were rewarded for their persistence when the excellent Gaudie crossed from close range just after the half hour.
