What is the point of having a TMO?

WHEN the pundits for BT Sport can spot a cheap-shot tackle, by a world renowned second row, but the TMO can’t, then (again) what’s the point of the TMO?
Of course I’m talking about Toulon lock Eben Etzebeth’s late tackle on Davit Niniyashvili in last weekend’s Challenge Cup final, after Niniyashvili mullared Etzebeth in a terrific tackle one minute earlier.
