THE European Cup is being diluted by the decision to extend the qualification criteria from six teams in each league (and the Challenge Cup winners and/or best league runners-up) to eight teams.
In a tournament that is a champions cup, which pits the best against the best, it is an attainable objective if it is limited to the top six in the English, French and Celtic/URC leagues – but if it becomes more like ‘the best along with the rest’ it loses kudos.
