Rochford battle to Westcliff success

ROCHFORD Hundred overcame a spirited and determined Westcliff to claim a bonus-point win over their long-standing rivals.

The home side started well, with hooker Robert Gardner going over for a try after four minutes and Chris Dudman converting. Westcliff launched a number of attacks, but were unable to break down the Rochford defence, while a few basic errors did not help their cause.

Powerful forward play resulted in the referee awarding Rochford a penalty try after 37 minutes, so they turned round at the break 14-0 to the good.

Westcliff came out strongly after half-time and some good attacking play resulted in fullback Gregory Bannister scoring a try and adding the extra two points.

The visitors kept up the pressure and were awarded a penalty in the 60th minute, which Bannister duly kicked over to make it 14-10 and it was game on.

However, the strength and power of the home side eventually paid off.

Centre Damien Brambley scored a well-taken try in the 70th minute and Dudman added the conversion. George Elliott then went over and Dudman slotted the conversion.

Westcliff got a late try by Jack Hogarth, converted by Bannister.
