Ellie’s late heroics take the sting out of Wasps

SUSIE Appleby hailed the desire of her players after a late Ellie Underwood try sealed a remarkable comeback victory away at FC.

A Lleucu Fflur penalty gave the lead at the break after Wasps scrum-half Claudia Mac- Donald cancelled out winger Kelly Smith's early try.

Second half tries from Edel McMahon and Sarah Mitchelson looked to have won it for Wasps but Natasha Hunt and a wonderful breakaway from Underwood proved decisive for the visitors.

And Appleby was jubilant as her players consolidated their play-off position in the table, praising their perseverance after securing an important away day win.

“We stuck in and that's the sign of a good side,” she said.

“That's why I am really pleased – we stuck in and got to a position where we could take advantage of the possession and get the win.”

Winer: Ellie Underwood

The visitors made an excellent start to the contest, taking the lead early on when Smith crossed in the corner.

Wasps responded quickly, as a brilliant solo effort from MacDonald saw them draw level before Fflur slotted over to make it 8-5 at halftime.

After the break, the hosts piled on the pressure and McMahon dotted down to give Wasps the lead in the game for the first time.

Five minutes later the forwards set up Mitchelson under the posts, and the conversion made it 17-8. Gloucester closed the gap to two points moments later when Hunt crossed over in the corner and Fflur added the extras, before a string of fluent Gloucester passes set Underwood free and she turned on the afterburners to touch down and seal a memorable late win.
