THE observant among you might have noticed that Newlands appeared five times on the fixture list in 1938 and has indeed featured as a Test venue on every Lions tour except 2009, which makes it even more surprising and ironic that its future seems in grave doubt.
Indeed, its obituary has already been penned by the South African Press who have read tea leaves and sadly concluded that England’s game their last month will be the last ever South Africa Test at the venue and that the Stormers’ 27-16 win over the Sharks last week was their last Super Rugby game at the historic venue.
