TONGA celebrated their first home Test in eight years with a nail-biting win over Samoa in the Pacific Nations Cup opener to keep alive their hopes of automatic qualification for the 2019 World Cup.
The tournament, which also involves Fiji, doubles as a qualifier for the World Cup with the combined 2016 and 2017 results deciding which two teams qualify.
Tonga built a 20-16 lead by half-time, then held Samoa out in the second half with a converted try and penalty from Newcastle scrum-half Sonatane Takulua.
