Scarlets Statement on behalf of Llanelli RFC

RFC, in conjunction with Rugby, can today confirm that a decision has been undertaken to convert Llanelli Rugby Club into a limited company, namely Llanelli RFC Limited, which now trades as Llanelli RFC.
This measure modernises Llanelli RFC's legal structure as a rugby club in line with WRU and good legal practice for running sporting clubs. It also prudently protects officers who are volunteers from personal liability in today's litigious world and is in line with best practice.
The new Llanelli RFC Board is composed of Chairman Meurig Griffiths, David Rees and Peter Williams together with Phil Morgan and Jon Daniels of the Scarlets. The existing Executive Committee charged with the day-to-day running of the club will remain as normal as will the Coaching staff.
Commenting on the news Llanelli RFC Chairman Meurig Griffiths said; “It was time for us to modernise our legal structure and incorporate as many other clubs have done. It also gives Llanelli RFC a more independent legal profile to enable us to run the business in a more transparent fashion, recognising our strong links with the Scarlets as a feeder club into professional rugby.
“We want to build upon our presence as the local semi-professional team representing Llanelli and wish to steadily grow our base in terms of local commercial sponsors and supporters as a senior member of the Principality .”
Jon Daniels, Scarlets General Manager of Rugby, went on to say; “We have been a region now for some thirteen years and whilst the partnership with Llanelli Rugby Club has contributed to the development of many Scarlets and players we feel improvements can be made in developing the RFC's identity as the town's rugby team and we are mindful of the need to create a more effective relationship.
“The incorporation of the club is a very good step forward and will enable it to stand more independently from the Scarlets Region. There is no reason why the RFC cannot grow and evolve separate and apart from the Scarlets whilst retaining our unique bond.
“The greater financial transparency will assist both parties and indeed it will also fall in line with the best practice WRU model for running sporting clubs. It is a positive step forward for the RFC and I look forward to working with Llanelli as one of our key feeder clubs next season and in the years to come.”
