's Richie Gray has been named at lock for as they prepare to face at Murrayfield on Sunday in front of a sell-out crowd
The blond-hair giant has been struggling to shake of an ankle injury for the last month but will partner captain Jim Hamilton at lock, subject to a fitness test later this week.
Head coach Andy Robinson has made five changes from the team who were undefeated in their tour to Australasia last summer.
Hamilton gets the nod over Alastair Kellock while Geoff Cross and Kelly Brown come in for Euan Murray and Richie Vernon.
In the back line, Nick De Luca return for the injured Joe Ansbro at centre with Mike Blair starting instead of the recuperating Chris Cusiter.
Brown, who will captain Scotland for the first time, will be winning his 50th cap, while there are first international starts at Murrayfield for backs Matt Scott and Tim Visser and prop Ryan Grant.
On the bench, 23-year-old scrum-half Henry Pyrgos could make his international debut following his fine form in recent weeks with Glasgow.
Robinson said: “For our first game of the season we will really need to start well and keep the game simple.
“New Zealand are the world champions and they perform the basic skills, well, under the highest pressure.
“We need to step up from the summer tour and be ready to go toe to toe in a physical contest, just as did most recently against New Zealand in Brisbane.”
The won 49-3 on their last visit to Murrayfield and arrive this year with 556 caps in the starting line-up and an additional 267 on the bench.
There are nine changes to the Kiwi side that fell inches short of equalling the world record of 17 straight Test wins by a top-tier nation after an 18-18 draw with Australia.
Tamati Ellison will partner Ben Smith in midfield replacing Conrad Smith and Ma'a Nonu who will hope to provide impact from the bench.
Julian Savea plays on the wing in place of Hosea Gear and Dan Carter has the new partner of Piri Weepu at scrum-half in the only other change in the backline.
Up front, Sam Whitelock is the only man to retain his place in the tight five as Wyatt Crockett, Andrew Hore and Owen Franks make up the front row and Luke Romano comes in for Brodie Retallick at lock.
Adam Thompson comes in to the back-row for Liam Messam and Victor Vito starts at No.8.
