The RFU has finally recognised that when Eddie Jones talked after defeat by South Africa in the 2019 World Cup final about “kicking stones down the road the next four years”, he was not joking.
Instead, the soundbite – which ended “and it’s hard to kick stones for four years” – gave a good indication that he had given England his best shot.
