Newport centre Cameron Davies scored a candidate for try of the season as he finished off a great move to keep his side in the hunt for a top-four finish.
Newport head coach Ty Morris had told his players before the game they needed to win all eight remaining matches to force their way into the playoffs and this win helped to move them up into sixth spot to get to within nine points of Ebbw Vale.
It wasn't until wing Ioan Davies flew over in the corner in the 76th minute that there was any real daylight between the two teams.
That sting in the tale had been preceded by a flying start for the Black & Ambers when hooker Henry Palmer converted a driving line-out into a fourth minute try.
Nathan Evans then departed in the 11th minute or a high tackle. Moments later, Aled Thomas put the Wizards on the scoreboard with a penalty.
Cameron Davies then crossed for his sensational score and Newport skipper Matt O'Brien added the extras.
Aberavon moved to within two points just after the hour mark when lock Shay Smallman went over for a try that Thomas converted. Then came the final score of the game from Ioan Davies to secure the win.
