Westcombe P……… 19

CANTERBURY fought back from a half-time deficit to edge to victory against battling visitors Westcombe Park.

Canterbury started the game well, but Frank Reynolds missed the first opportunity for points. Instead, it was Westcombe Park who opened the scoring with a try from Tom Wickets, converted by Nathan Wyman.

Canterbury did fire back up the hill with a score for captain Jamie Stephens. Reynolds atoned for his earlier penalty miss by adding the extras.

Westcombe scored next through Samuel Fombo, with Wyman again converting.

A Reynolds penalty on the stroke of halftime left the score at 12-10 in the visitors' favour.

In the second half, Canterbury were dominant, but not clinical.

This was best illustrated in a passage of play that brought three scrum penalties on the Park line before the hosts were turned away by a resilient Westcombe defence.

The counter attack led to a Westcombe try in the corner for Nicholas Cook in the 63rd minute, but the conversion was missed.

Despite that set-back, the home side refused to be beaten.

A penalty from Reynolds got them back in front in the 65th minute and then Cameron Macmillan scored the final try of the match with six minutes remaining to seal a narrow win.
