Radwan’s aiming to fly high with Falcons

Despite finishing bottom and with relegation set to return in next season's top flight, winger Adam Radwan insists his side are looking up the table under a new coaching staff led by Alex Codling.

experienced a rocky campaign with victories over and a double over , compounded by a miserable end to the season that saw them suffer five consecutive defeats whilst shipping a woeful 226 points, an average of 45 per game.

But Radwan is encouraged by the new regime led by Codling and with a multitude of new signings including Tim Cardall (Melbourne Rebels), Rory Jennings () and Eduardo Bello (Saracens), he believes it's an exciting time for the 's most northern team.

He said: “It's really exciting. It's going to be a very tough year. I think the Premiership in recent years has got more and more competitive and I think next year will be the same. Realistically anyone can beat anyone on their day, look at some of the results from last year. Everyone wants to play in a tough league.

“We've got a load of new guys coming in, so everyone's getting to know each other embracing the hard work we've now got to put in.

“It was quite a strange year with everything that was going on in rugby. At the club it was a year that had lots of ups and downs. It was a tough year to be honest but I think we'll learn from our mistakes. There's been a lot of changes in the squad for this year which has put us in a better position and I'm sure we'll do much better than last season.” The 25-year-old winger enjoyed a sensational 2020/21 campaign where he scored seven tries in 11 Premiership games, attracting the attention of .

Radwan made his mark instantly on the international stage in July 2021 scoring a hat-trick against Canada and went onto score after just three minutes against Tonga in an Autumn Nations Cup win at Twickenham.

However, Radwan has since fallen out of favour with the selectors as the Hartlepool-born flyer has fallen victim to head coach Steve Borthwick's embarrassment of riches in the back three.

Radwan, who scored six tries in 24 games last season, still remains hopeful of playing for England again and will be keeping a close eye on the national team inspired by Falcons mate Jamie Blamire, below.

He said: “I'm a massive England fan. One of my best mates is in there from Newcastle, so I speak to him regularly. I'll still always watch England and I wish them well in the .

“I want to get back in the England squad as that's my one big goal. Playing my best rugby consistently for Newcastle is going to put me in the best position to do that. I don't want to get too focused on the longterm goals and instead just focus when the season comes round – that it's week by week making sure I'm putting my best foot forward.”
