NORTHAMPTON boss Chris Boyd backed his team's decision to kick that last-minute penalty.
“They discussed it and George Furbank, in particular, was confident he could step and do the job,” said Boyd. “It wasn't to be.”
Boyd said he felt his side's performance merited a win after that bashing at Leicester last week.
“We had control for large periods and to put that effort in and to come up short was disappointing.
However, there were a lot chances out there and we did not turn our pressure into points. We also surrendered them their points too easily.”
Sale's director of rugby Alex Sanderson said his team's tries from kicks showed how much time his players spent in training.
“Arron Reed is performing unbelievable well.
Without his pace we would not have won,” he said.
“We work a lot on our kicking game and do the hard work in training.
“You can only play as well as the opposition allow you and that was probably our worse performance in four or five weeks. If you can play bad and win then you are going places.”
