Keep Portugal in game

A weekly look at the game's other talking points

Portugal might have become the surprise package of RWC2023 for some, but wise and loyal readers of this column knew exactly what to expect.

I've been chronicling Portugal's rise for three or four years now and you were all well briefed to look out for the skills and sheer rugby joie de vivre of Raffaele Storti, Samuel Marques, Nuno Sousa Guedes, Mike Tadjer and Jose Madeira. What I hadn't counted on was the world class athleticism of flanker Nicolas Martins and the all-round excellence of captain and centre Tomas Appleton who led his team with his dazzling dentist's smile … and a clenched fist. Some operator in midfield.

Their skills are instinctive but they knew they would count for nothing unless they could somehow get their fitness up to scratch. That was their priority this summer and indeed in one way they had no option. No Tier 1 opposition could be organised for a warm up, they “made do” with and A although fair play to who joined them for a week of intensive training in camp.

Perhaps on this occasion not playing too many matches and picking up big injuries was a blessing. They still lack depth and Storti and Marques only made the tournament by the skin of their teeth anyway after fighting serious injuries.

The rest you know. Much honour in defeat against Wales, very unlucky not to beat Georgia, magnificent against an angry Australia who got away with blue murder in the second half. Hopefully this afternoon they can go to the well one more time against although it's a big ask.

But what next? They of course have the annual Rugby Europe , and you really should try and catch some of the action. Treat yourself to a weekend in Lisbon or access the Rugby Europe site and their excellent free matchday stream. But beyond that there is nothing planned. No Tier 1 nations lined up to further their rugby educations, no A teams dropping in. Nothing. Surely World Rugby cannot stand by and let them wither on the vine like they have others.

Don't hold your breath but here's a suggestion. Why don't the take the initiative? Get them over at the end of January. I guarantee you they would damn well nearly fill Twickenham. Portugal, as every schoolboy knows, are 's oldest allies in all the world. Bring on the annual 1386 Cup to be played as a warm up every year before the and Rugby Europe Championship. Much better than idling away in camp.
