The Northampton Saints backs duo will join up with the squad after this weekend’s Aviva Premiership final against Leicester.

Both uncapped, Burrell, 25, and Myler, 28, replace the injured Alex Goode (shoulder) and Joel Tomkins (ankle).

England Head Coach Stuart Lancaster said: “Luther Burrell and Stephen Myler have both played well in the second half of the season and they’ve both got a great opportunity to put a marker down for the future on tour in Uruguay and Argentina.

With nine tourists featuring for the Tigers and the Saints on Saturday, England have also called up Exeter Chiefs scrum-half Haydn Thomas and Sale Sharks lock Kearnan Myall to prepare for this Sunday’s match against the Barbarians at Twickenham Stadium.

Scrum half Thomas, 30, is in contention for a first appearance in a senior England shirt while 6ft 7in lock Myall, 26, has featured for England Saxons since 2009.

Lancaster added: “This week it’s good to have Haydn and Kearnan involved in the senior England environment ahead of what should be a great game against a very strong Barbarians team. They have both played well recently and deserve this opportunity”

England name their side for Sunday’s match against the Barbarians on Friday at 11am.

Lance Corporal Ricky Reeves will join London Wasps next season from Bedford Blues.

On the back of an impressive season in the Championship, the experienced prop, who is part of the 33 Engineer Regiment bomb disposal unit and has served with the British Army in Afghanistan, will be given a sabbatical period by the Army in order to play in the top flight of English rugby.

Having previously played for Cambridge, the Army and Bedford, Reeves also made a number of appearances for Saracens this season in the LV=Cup and was part of the recent Army victory over the Navy at Twickenham.

Reeves is the third player to join from Bedford after flyer Josh Basset and hooker Neil Cochrane already agreed terms with the Men in Black in recent weeks.

London Wasps Director of Rugby Dai Young said: “Ricky is an experienced player who has been a key part of Bedford’s excellent season this year and is very keen to be given a chance in the Premiership.

“He will be a very useful addition to our squad and we are looking forward to seeing what he can do at the top level.”

Reeve’s Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Eldon Millar MBE, said: “I am pleased to allow Lance Corporal Reeves this opportunity with Wasps.

“The qualities required of a Premiership Rugby player epitomise those built into a Royal Engineer Bomb Disposal & Search soldier – courage, discipline, respect and commitment. Reeves possesses these traits and hopefully they will develop further to the benefit of both parties.”

1. The soft drift defence

A soft drift defence is all too soft for my liking. The soft drift is when the opposition has more numbers than you on one side of the pitch and to counter balance that the defenders run backwards and to the side, in tandem with the winger if he’s on the end of the defensive line, to make the attack go laterally. I prefer it when the drift has an offensive purpose to it rather than just about being safe. I suppose my ideal defensive strategy would be a mixture of blitz and drift, as I’m a personal believer in putting pressure on the attacking side. Dai Bishop, a former team-mate of mine at Moseley, was brilliant at coming out of the line and smashing people. I loved playing inside him.

TRP verdict: It’s not a good start, we’re drifting off here.

2. Golf

Golf frustrates me immensely. I used to work at a golf course, driving the buggies and selling drinks out on the course. Back then I’d be able to hit the odd ball well. Nowadays, though, I’m awful. As soon as I put the ball on the tee I know that it’s going to go nowhere – or in the trees, bushes, water…If I’m playing with my brother and best mate who are both pretty decent I’ll take a tee shot, one off the fairway, and then give up otherwise I’ll just be holding them up all day long. I spend most of my round just looking for lost balls – mine and those of the other unfortunate souls who thought zigging-zagging your way across a golf course – and walking three times the distance you’re supposed to – was a good way to spend four hours!

TRP verdict: Don’t be tee-d off, but you’re out.

3. Cooking

If I’m cooking for myself, fine. My frustration boils over when I have to cook for other people. I share a place with a mate and my brother and we’re supposed to take it in turns in the kitchen. However I seem to have been excluded from the list. While I’m more than happy with a plain chicken breast and rice without a sauce, everyone else moans that it’s too dry and boring. The only time I’ve pulled off any dish that you could halfway describe as being adventurous was when I cooked a nice lamb shoulder for my ex-girlfriend’s parents. Even then, though, I had to religiously follow instructions from my uncle that I’d saved on my phone. Way too stressful! Fortunately – or unfortunately, whichever way you look at it, I have one of the fastest metabolisms known to man and find it very hard to put on weight. That means I can get away with the odd fish and chips if I ever get tired of my own cooking.

TRP verdict: It’s plain and simple, you need to simmer down and put a lid on it. You’re out again.

After leading Toulon to their first Heineken Cup, Jonny Wilkinson has been presented with the ERC Player of the Year award.

The English fly-half kicked the winning conversion to help the French side overcome favourites Clermont 16-15 yesterday to end the game with a perfect four from four and 11 points from the tee.

Wilkinson racked up 56 points in the knock-out games to finish the campaign as the top points scorer with 108 points.

“To receive an award of this importance towards the end of my career is really special. I feel privileged to have been nominated,” said Wilkinson.

Clermont Auvergne trio of Julien Bonnaire, Wesley Fofana and Sitiveni Sivivatu and Leinster’s Jamie Heaslip were the other four players on the shortlist.

Folau only made the switch to rugby union last summer but he has impressed the coaches scoring seven tries in Super Rugby already to overcome fierce competition from Brumbies’ flyer Jesse Mogg who is unlucky to miss out.

However there is no room for Quade Cooper with Deans opting for James O’Connor as his man to lead the attack.

The Reds superstar has been in good form recently but it seems he is still paying for his “toxic” comments last year.

There is still hope though as Deans is set to add six players to the squad just before the Test series starts.

One of these players could be Toulouse scrum-half Luke Burgess, who is returning Down Under at the end of the season, as Will Genia is the only scrum-half in the squad.

Alongside Folau, Brumbies captain Ben Mowen and playmaker Christian Lealiifano are the other two uncapped player in the 25-man squad.

As expected, George Smith and Tatafu Polota-Nau miss out after picking up injuries yesterday.

Wallabies squad:

Props: Ben Alexander, Sekope Kepu, Benn Robinson, James Slipper

Hookers: Saia Faingaa, Stephen Moore

Locks: James Horwill, Rob Simmons, Sitaleki Timani

Back-row: Dave Dennis, Liam Gill, Scott Higginbotham, Michael Hooper, Ben Mowen, Wycliff Palu

Scrum-half: Will Genia

Fly-half: Jame O’Connor

Centres: Adam Ashley-Cooper, Rob Horne, Christian Lealiifano

Back three: Berrick Barnes, Nick Cummins, Israel Folau, Digby Ioane, Joe Tomane

London Irish prop Tom Smallbone has been doing more than his fair share of homework this season and hopes it will pay dividends should he step into his mentor’s shoes next season.

Smallbone, 19, has been with the Exiles since he was four years old but a shoulder reconstruction sidelined him for much of this season.

Far from dwell on his disappointment however, Smallbone has been juggling his studies as a first-year geography student at Royal Holloway with hours of analysis on scrummaging with England international Alex Corbisiero.

And Smallbone insists he will forever be in Corbisiero’s debt having served his apprenticeship under his guidance, but he’s adamant he will be ready to fill the void left next season when the England man goes to Northampton.

“It’s incredibly frustrating as a young player, going into your first pro season, to have such a long-term injury,” said Smallbone, who has been given a three-year contract extension.

“But you have to get on with it. It was good because it gave me a chance to focus on my degree which took my mind off being injured and then it has been fantastic to work with Alex.

“We’ve been out injured together and we’ve spent ages looking at videos, discussing all the looseheads in the Premiership to see how they play and all the tightheads to see what you have to do against them.”

Smallbone, who featured at England U16 and U18 level, has forced his way into the squad for the summer’s Junior World Championship in France despite missing the Six Nations.

“That was a real motivating factor for me during rehab,” he added. “I always thought if I could get back before the end of the season and prove myself then I’d have a chance.”

His shoulder problem – sustained in scrummaging practice against Tongan tighthead Leo Halavatau – means Smallbone is yet to feature for Irish this season but he did enough to show his fitness while on loan at Richmond.

He had returned for the end of the campaign to help Richmond survive in National One but now he’s setting about forging his career with Irish, his boyhood club. “It was a real no-brainer when I got the offer of a new contract,” he said. “It was a big show of confidence for me after my injury and a big boost.

“I’ve been with the club since I was four so I no desire to go anywhere else.

“Irish was the nearest club for me and I got involved with a few mates so it was something I enjoyed doing.

“It is a good set-up and they implement a tiered system when you start from bronze and work your way up to gold. Just getting through into the top group the training is more intense and you get a feel for what the professional game is like.

“There are a lot of players moving on from Irish next season and a lot coming in but I want to lay down a marker and get as much game time as I possibly can next season.”

In front of their home fans at the RDS, the Irish side secured their fourth European title in five seasons as the reigning Heineken Cup Champions were crowned Champions of Europe in 2009, 2011 and 2012.

They went off to a flying start as Ian Madigan dived under the post after only two minutes being on the end of well-executed move by Isa Nacewa and Jonny Sexton.

Stade Francais got into the game but couldn’t get in the scoreboard and instead, Leinster doubled the lead with a well-taken try touched down by Sean Cronin half-way through the first half.

Jerome Porical put the French on the board with a penalty but the Irish crossed the line for the third time soon after to take a 21-3.

Porical kicked another penalty on the brink of half-time but trailing 21-6, the game was already over.

Sexton extended the lead with two penalties of his own to bring the lead to 27-6 on the hour mark.

We are. It’s the money month now and all about momentum. We had a sticky patch but the sun’s shining, we’re smiling again and looking forward to the play-offs.

Why the sticky patch?

Every team goes through them and it was frustrating, but there was no panic. We had a good week in Spain and it’s how you come through it that counts.

Can you believe you’ve been here for five years?

No! Someone showed me the stats and I’ve played over 120 games, scored nearly 1,500 points and that just blew me away. It’s been a fantastic time.

What’s so special about Quins?

It’s the enjoyment factor that keeps me playing. I’m a firm believer that if you enjoy the club and the guys you’re playing with, you’ll play well yourself.

Easy decision to re-sign until 2016?

I had serious options in Japan and France but it came down to where I thought I’d enjoy myself the most. I like the ambition at Quins and my partner loves it here.

Fancy coaching after you finish playing?

It does appeal. I’m starting my Level 3 course next year and like helping the young guys. That’s the first step and I might look at doing some media punditry, too.

Teenage rugby heroes?

We’d watch the All Blacks on TV, then recreate the match afterwards and I was always Grant Fox. But I also really admired Stephen Larkham and modelled my passing and attacking game on him.

Where do you live in London?

Southfields, near Wimbledon, about 500 yards from the All England Tennis club. I’ve been there a couple of times and it’s brilliant. Strawberries and cream… yummy!

Has London life ticked all the boxes?

It has. We’ve done the West End shows, been to football matches, done all the sights and really made the most of things by travelling around Europe as well.

Best country visited?

Croatia. The beautiful coastline and clear blue water reminded me of New Zealand. I was brought up on the ocean and that’s one of the things you miss.

Love fishing, don’t you?

Yes, deep-sea ocean fishing. That’s a real passion of mine. If I didn’t play rugby I’d be a professional fisherman, charter a boat and take people out on to the ocean.

Enjoy other sports?

Golf, tennis and football. I’ve also been to the basketball at the O2, NFL at Wembley and love going to watch the Boat Race. I love all that sort of stuff.

What’s your football team?

The boys made me pick a team so I follow West Ham. Danny Care loves Liverpool and Ugo Monye’s a big Arsenal fan, so there’s plenty of banter.

If you could be another sportsman?

Tiger Woods. I enjoy my golf – play off a 15 handicap – and would love to be a pro golfer. Tiger really changed the face of the sport.

Best and worst banter at Quins?

Danny Care’s the best. He’s got the gift of the gab and always comes up smelling of roses. Worst is Mark Lambert, who’s just far too intelligent.

Best and worst dressed?

Worst are me, Ben Botica and Nic Mayhew… three scruffy Kiwis. Best is Ugo Monye, who’s very sharp and is king of the bling with all his watches and gear.

Pre-match rituals?

I’ve got a blue cap I always wear to matches and I like to have spaghetti Bolognese the night before a home game. Being a 10, I’m very routine based.

Best advice received?

“Nobody remembers who comes second!” That came from my dad and he was right. And before an All Blacks trial, when I was about 23, Highlanders coach Greg Cooper told me never to force things. He was right, too.

Favourite food?

Steak and chips. But another thing I really miss over here is freshly caught snapper between two slices of white, buttered bread. It’s beautiful.

Remaining career ambitions?

More silverware. Retaining the Premiership would be a good start but beyond that I’d love to lift the Heineken Cup and we’re making progress towards that.
